Host Guidelines - Starbucks Workers United Strike Solidarity Campaign

Union Starbucks baristas have launched a national, open-ended strike to protest Starbucks' historic union-busting and failure to finalize a fair contract. It is the longest strike in Starbucks history! And our call to action is clear: Stop Buying Starbucks while baristas are on strike!

Starbucks has had four years to negotiate a fair union contract and resolve outstanding unfair labor practices. Instead, they’ve closed union stores, fired union leaders, and dragged their feet in bargaining while making record profits. Reaching a fair deal would cost Starbucks less than one day of sales, but the company would rather spend millions on union-busting and lavish management conferences than pay its workers a living wage.

No contract, no coffee is more than a tagline; it’s a pledge to join the workers' strike—with our wallets—until a fair union contract and an end to unfair labor practices are won. That’s why union baristas are calling on customers and allies to show up at non-union Starbucks stores and turn away customers, beginning November 13. Every conversation is a chance to grow solidarity and support baristas holding the line.

Thank you for hosting a Starbucks Solidarity Action! Your work is critical to helping put pressure on Starbucks. If you have any questions, call/text Zachary T. at 914-357-0696.

1) Label your action: "Starbucks Workers United Solidarity [Action Type] ([date] @[location])". Chose a Starbucks store near you for when choosing the address for your action. Before making an action make sure it does not conflict with others in walkable distance, by looking at this map. You should schedule your action to last between 1.5 to 2.5 hours long.

2) Recruit people to attend. We recommend trying to recruit at least 1–2 additional people to join you, though you can do this alone if needed! Metro DC DSA Labor Working Group will also promote your event.

3) Send reminders to attendees: On the night before your event, you should send out a reminder email or text to all of the people who have RSVP’d your event - including those who RSVPd online - to re-share the event details and confirm they can attend.

4) Prep your materials: print out Black and White Leaflets or Color Leaflets at your local library or at-home printer on 8.5x11 paper and cut them into quarters.

5) Review and print the raps below: Printable Customer and Barista Rap (in case you want to print out and share with others). Customer Script: Hi! Did you know union baristas are on strike? Unionized Starbucks baristas across the country are fighting for fair pay, stable schedules, better staffing, and an end to union busting. They’ve been negotiating for years, and now they’re on the picket line.

The best way to support them right now is to not buy Starbucks while they’re on strike. Every person who skips Starbucks sends a message to the company that workers’ demands matter. Will you stop buying Starbucks while baristas are on strike?

6) Host your action:

Arrive 15–20 minutes early so you're ready to go when the action starts.
Kick off with intros, talking to baristas, grounding, and a small training: introduce yourselves, share why you’re there, go over big 3, practice your pitch in pairs, and goals! Aim to collect about 15 pledges per person, per hour.
Begin your action: start your conversations

Debrief as a group: What worked? What was hard? What would you do differently next time?
